Wooden mirror painted in black gloss. Has a great gothic, fairy tale feel to it. We think it’ll fit with the Alice in Wonderland meets backstage dressing room vibe we want in our eventual boutique.

I’ve always had a thing for doors…
in photography and even as decor pieces inside the home. Not to mention the countless ways they can be repurposed.

Changing the color of your front door (as in the first photo) can entirely transform the look of your home’s exterior.

Weekend Design Inspiration
Here at lili&gen we not only provide custom furniture and unique accessories, but we also offer decor services. I thought I’d write a post to show you one of our personal designs since it’s been a while.
I had originally placed three small mirrors on the wall of this dining room but ended up switching them for this neat row of framed prints. The mirrors looked too puny on the wall which is rather large and so I kept thinking the wall looked too empty. The centre print is a feather illustration and we still have one available at lili&gen :)
On the opposite wall, I wanted a statement piece so I hung a large horizontal mirror with a thick white frame (purchased at Ikea) to provide lots of contrast against the dark grey/purple wall (“ebony slate” by Benjamin Moore). This apartment is located in Montreal’s Plateau neighborhood and so it contains all original moulding (that white armoire for example, is original to the building) which is gorgeous but makes painting difficult due to all the rough, uneven edges. Personally though, I’d take character over perfection any day.
On the shelf, I placed vintage glass milk bottles and paired them with lime candles. The light fixture and photograph that can be seen in the mirror are also from Ikea. God bless Ikea accessories.

Color Block Me
Color blocking is a trend that’s recently stepped off the fashion runway and into the home. It consists of using bold opposites on the color wheel and combining them to create the widest contrast possible. I’ve always loved “mod” fashion and was excited to see this trend popping up on the home decor scene.

Natural, Exposed Brick vs Painted, White Brick
If you’re lucky enough to have a brick wall in your home, then you may be faced with this dilemma. A natural, exposed brick wall lends a warm, old-world charm to a room while a white brick wall gives a cool, gallery effect. I prefer the modern look of the latter but I know so many people who wouldn’t dream of touching a natural brick wall. Gen being one of them. We know we definitely want a brick wall in the boutique but we’ve been going back and forth about the natural vs white issue…if you can even really call that an issue. We never fight. Promise.
Which do you prefer?

I came across this DIY kitchen decor idea on Brightnest blog and had to share. It’s also a super affordable way to update and add some color to your kitchen. I’ve also seen this same technique used on furniture and I love how it’s quirky yet still minimal and clean.
